InformationKnown as “Flag of the Mayas”, the walled city of Mayapán is considered to be the last great Mayan capital, and although it is not a place that has had great construction works, more than four thousand architectonic structures have been discovered in it. In its center temples were raised, among these the biggest was a replica the Castle of Chichen Itzá but in smaller dimensions. It was named Kukulcán.
Here also civic, administrative and religious buildings can be observed, as well as the residences of the ruling class. The round buildings known as observatories and the small sanctuaries are very representative of this city.
Open every day from 8 to 15 hours, it is located in km 45 of the Merida-Acanceh highway, in the same direction as the route named Route of the Convents. An interesting phenomenon of light and shade takes place in this site during the winter solstice, identical to the one of Chichen Itzá.
