Caves and Cenotes
Caves.
Part of an intricate system of spectacular tunnels, underground caves were sacred places for the Maya; an abundance of natural rock formations transport visitors to this secret world which time has most jealously guarded: Loltun. Calcehtok and Balankanche among hundreds of others illustrate nature’s generosity towards Yucatan.
Cenotes.
Water-filled cavities: unique in the world, a supply of fresh water on the Yucatán plains where there are no rivers…
These places are sacred to the Maya:
- A necessary passage between the human and the spiritual from the cosmovision of the inhabitants of the Mayab.
- Sunlight filtered through holes between the rocks, or crystalline, ground level waters, enigmatic formations…
- The cenotes are like an endless necklace creating ecosystems of such perfect balance, and inspiring beauty.
The great metropolises of the Mayan culture were built up around these natural water deposits, which were cult objects and ancestral mysteries.
