Caves and Cenotes

Caves.
Part of an intricate system of spectacular tunnels, underground caves were sacred places for the Maya; an abundance of natural rock formations transport visitors to this secret world which time has most jealously guarded: Loltun. Calcehtok and Balankanche among hundreds of others illustrate nature’s generosity towards Yucatan.

Cenotes.
Water-filled cavities: unique in the world, a supply of fresh water on the Yucatán plains where there are no rivers…

These places are sacred to the Maya:
  • A necessary passage between the human and the spiritual from the cosmovision of the inhabitants of the Mayab.
  • Sunlight filtered through holes between the rocks, or crystalline, ground level waters, enigmatic formations…
  • The cenotes are like an endless necklace creating ecosystems of such perfect balance, and inspiring beauty.
  • The great metropolises of the Mayan culture were built up around these natural water deposits, which were cult objects and ancestral mysteries.
