Ecoturismo
El Corchito
“El Corchito” is located one kilometer from Chicxulub Puerto boulevard. The name arises from the abundance of Annona glabra trees with their cork-like roots.
El Corchito is a freshwater spring in Petén which has been conditioned to receive visitors and tourists. This ecotourist park has 500 meters of paths through an extension of 150 hectares of mangroves. There are springs and palapas for visitors to use.
On arrival, the river launch will take care of transporting you, a distinguished guest, across the rowing and canoeing course of the river. Once in the interior, there is a dock where you can disembark and walk around amidst a surprising cacophony of birdcalls. Three kinds of mangroves grow here, red, white and black, and you can learn how each fits into the habitat and the important role it plays in the ecosystem.
This is an interactive park where you will have the opportunity to meet “Huacho”, a crocodile of approximately 3 meters in length who has lived in these parts for more than 5 years. You’ll be able to observe various bird species such as white cranes, cormorants, pink flamingos among many others.
There are also 4 cooling freshwater springs: “Venados” (deer); “Corchito” (cork), where you can take an invigorating dip; “Helechos” (ferns), suitable for children at only one meter deep; and “Pajaros” (birds).
The guided tour in this natural park takes around 45 minutes but you can stay as long as you like. In addition to the palapas and rustic furniture, there are also ecological bathrooms and rest areas.
El Corchito opens its doors every day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and is reasonably priced.
